Christmas Gulls '06! [landGulls Project]
A *lot* of details below - click here -
And to those who say I have no life... I say...... "Yeah, so...?"
OK, here we go!
Every year during Christmas Day, I try as hard as I can to make time to try my Backyard Bag Feeder Project with the local gulls. For some reason, the *lack* of people on Christmas Day brings the gulls around in droves, and as I've seen many times before, the more gulls there are, the more they'll be confident around something that's not usually in their presence - the Feeder Mat - but this year's "Christmas Gulls" were even more interesting than all of that!
Usually during a typical "Christmas Gulls" session, I have a 99% chance of seeing Ring-Billed Gulls and a slight, little chance of seeing a larger species. I've seen one or two juvenile Herring Gulls before in the past, but this year there were at *least* 10 different Herring Gulls! Right in the beginning, you can see an *adult* Herring Gull checking things out! This is my first time in 7 years where I've seen an adult Herring Gull in this area, so it's an extremely special recording! Not only that, but the actual "sucess" rate with the Feeder project is much higher this year than it's ever been before on Christmas!
• 2004, it took them 50 minutes to even check the Feeder Mat (or the food on it) out in the *first* place, there weren't *any* Herrings... not to mention my "ground cam" wasn't really... working that well... er... OK, it sucked.
• 2005, there were a few Herrings, but it took them a while to notice the food again, most likely because I had the mic very visable, about 5 feet from the Feeder Mat, so I'm assuming that it scared them off... but...
This year, I had the mic even *closer*, and the Herrings took right to it! Having the mic on the scene meant that I could talk back and forth to my mother (who also loves to watch the Gulls "live" on my "Christmas Gulls" sessions) without picking any of that up! It also means I have VERY GOOD SOUND of the Herring Gull's squawks! Much different than Ring-Billeds - *much* more racous and *much* louder! Eee-hee-hee-hee-hee! The Herrings definitely rule the Feeder project! Er, when they're *there*, anyway...
One other HUGE thing to note - the Herring Gull juvenile standing on the Mat in the beginning... That specific Feeder Mat design is the exact same design, the exact same bag size, the exact same foam size, etc... as the raccoon feeder was back in June. That juvenile Herring Gull is (if you compare the 2 clips) as large if not LARGER than a raccoon! That is definitely cool to see!
One more thing (what, more?!) - The entire "Christmas Gulls" video is about 50 minutes long, but I only uploaded a small snippet of it here. There's much more, including a fight between a Herring and a (much smaller!) Ring-Billed later on and some ground shots, but the landGulls clips seem to be my least favored of my collection, so I'm going to hold back on throwing the whole thing up here unless anyone wants to see more ~ just let me know!
(OK... now I'm done... :))
Something to say?....put it here
