Save your movie for e-mail

Published: August 8, 2006

An easy way to share a short movie with friends and family is to e-mail it to them directly from Windows Movie Maker. The quality won’t be as good as a DVD or CD, but you can’t beat the speed of delivery. In a few easy steps, Movie Maker can create a new e-mail message for you with a lower-resolution version of your movie attached to the message. Then, all you have to do is add a recipient and click Send.

To save and send your movie as an e-mail message

1.

Open your project in Movie Maker.

2.

In the Movie Tasks pane, under Finish Movie, click Send in e-mail.

3.

The Save Movie Wizard opens, and Movie Maker creates a lower-resolution version of your movie that can be attached to an e-mail message. On the Ready to Send By E-mail page, click Next.

4.

The Save Movie Wizard creates a blank e-mail message for you with the movie attached. In the To box, type the recipient’s e-mail address. In the Subject box, type a message to introduce the attached movie, such as “A video of my puppy.” If you want to preview the movie before you send it, you can double-click the attachment and the movie will open in a new window. When you’re ready, click Send.

An e-mail message with a video attachment

Recipients of your e-mail message can double-click the attachment to watch the movie.

Note: Messages with video attachments can take a few minutes to send and receive because of the large file size of the attachment.

Sharing higher-resolution video

Movie Maker automatically reduces the file size of your movie for you to make it easy to send through e-mail. Reducing file size also reduces video resolution. You may want to have more control over the file size. For example, if you are sending your movie to a friend who can receive larger files in e-mail, you might want to send a higher-resolution video, which will be better quality.

To adjust the file size of your movie in Movie Maker

1.

In Movie Maker, click the Tools menu, and then click Options.

2.

In the Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab. In the E-mail group, click the up arrow to increase the maximum attachment size. Then click OK.

Note: Many mail servers will allow attachments of 4 MB or larger, but others have lower size limits. If you have trouble sending—or your recipient has trouble receiving—a message, try reducing the file size of your video attachment and re-sending the messag
